Conscience Alley in Elms

In this half term’s English lessons, we’re reading and exploring the story ‘Knockdown Row’, about a boy who goes into a house due to be demolished to steal money from a vulnerable old lady.

Today, we used conscience alley to explore reasons why Nick should or should not go into the house. We articulated the reasons for and against excellently, and the children playing Nick were able to give clear and reasoned answers as to whether Nick should go into the house or not. We have also used the story to discuss peer pressure, gang membership and safety around abandoned or derelict buildings, linking to our PSHE curriculum. We will use our conscience alley activity to support our mini write, a balanced argument about whether Nick should go into the house. We will then use the story to inspire suspense narratives of our own.
